It's sort of a game to see if they ever reappear. Some do.

Dumb. If he does not want it, why not sell it and donate the money to Red Cross, Cancer Society etc.

I got a large sandwhich bag of 1940`s to 1960`s Canadian cents that I bought from a flea market vendor st the St Lawrence market last summer. Paid 2 bucks. I hunted through them all looking for any gold mines, none, and very little lustre on them, so I thought I`d try the old `soak them in ketchup`cleaning method to see for myself how they`d look. Well now they look like hell, so I saved them to do the exact same thing...get them out in circulation and see if I can cause any pandemonium. I just dont know how to do it effectively..people dont care about 1 cent coins

Hopefully a collector gets them or it starts a new one.

A lot of collectors do it hoping they will either spark an interest in people who are not collectors like we are. There is no guarantee that it want end up in the ocean. but either way I think its a cool idea.

Even I do this - release old coins in the hope someone will pick it up to enjoy the hobby.
This is the only place in the world where circulation coins featuring the portrait of George V haven't been demonetized.

I live in North York but buy my rolls downtown, four times out of five. I might switch that :)

Interesting, probably would never even know if it ended up in somebodys hands who cared, but it could follow an interesting path along the way. Kind of like how some people would track Washington dollar bill and have people register it online just to see where it's journey went and how far it travelled. They stamped a web address on the note and then people could log in and see where it had been and update the last place it was. kinda fun I guess...

One thing comes to mind: J.O.P.
Perhaps a little counterstamping went along?

No to counter stamping but it had a couple rim nicks that make it easy to identify should it ever appear on the forums we troll. (I mean troll in the languish along in a boat sense, not the internet sense)

My manager found a 1930 5 cent coin (probably graded around F or EF) in North York last night and gave it to me this morning. :)
These coins stick out in change like a sore thumb. I wonder if it was another release to the wild, or someone spending part of their collection by mistake (I'm guessing the former)

I'm guessing it was in an elderly persons piggy bank, or rolled up.
When I was hunting nickel rolls for pre-1982s, most of the old stuff (Pre 1951 lets say) I found was rolled up and marked with the year on the roller. People bring in their deceased relatives leftover coins to banks all the time. Also, with the economy the way it has been over the last few years, lots of people have been cashing in their piggy banks with old stuff in it.
