I don't know the price of copper but evidently it has risen quite a bit recently. Everynight on the local news for the past couple of weeks, here in San Antonio, there have been reports of thieves stealing copper. It is disgusting as they have taken copper from air conditioners, car radiators, wiring from homes being built, and even several hundred bronze vases from a cemetary. I've also been a victim as they've absconded with a large diameter and expensive wire that connects my warehouse to a breaker box. Luckily, they've caught a couple of people and the recycling centers are cooperating with authorities. Is this happening elsewhere in the country?

Also, thanks to you all, I've been hoarding pre-1982 cents and am now up to about 65 rolls. It took alot of searching to accumulate these. Do you think it will have been worth it in the long run?

This sort of thing even happens down here in Australia. It has been known for thieves to go to remote country areas and steal miles of copper wire from the power poles that line the roads.

I believe it closed today at $3.60/lb. Cool...copper isn't traded by the ounce like gold and silver ;-)

Copper is mainly used for wires as it is a good conductor relative to it's price. In the past, coins were minted in this metal because of it's abundant availability. Nowadays because of it's strong demand in prices, copper is more often alloyed in other metals such as NiCupro, or as an excellent choice to alloy with other precious metals. This is done to save costs as well as to give alloy metals better properties (although I personally don't agree with NiCupro alloy as there are people who are allegric to nickel)

The reason why copper prices have risen to such rate is not only because of strong demand but because major companies and such do not actively go out to find specifically copper mines unless it is proven that it has a large amount of ores. Typically copper is often found together with other precious metals especially with gold, which is a valuable commdity. Or alternatively copper is found other alloys such as Iron-copper and such.

But even so, copper is rarely found as pure form which means it has to be refined from the precious metal ores. Copper is usually found as copper sulfide and refining such metals is, not costly, but harming the enviroment. And thanks to the expensive fuel costs, transportation from the mines has definately risen, refining costs etc, and tada! The grand final price of what you have to pay.

It is much cheaper to recycle copper afterall!

Could the nickels and pennys really go away? If so I'm buying a bunch of silver and regular proof sets and mint sets for this year. Would these be more valuable since they may be the last ones of their kind?

Yes. They were going to switch to an aluminum or a steel core/copper clad cent in 1974. But then the price dropped enough to allow bureaucrats to sit back for a few years and displace volume. Which reminds me, does anyone know what the census bureau do for the other 9 years?
