Well I decided to put this in the auction at the Philadelphia Expo. Hopefully it will be widely viewed by the biggest dealers. The director at Stack's told me it would be an excellent addition to the auction because he had a great collection of extremely rare Confederate notes. The big question, what auction house should I use and should I put a reserve on it?

I'm not a paper currency guy but your note is interesting. I looked on ebay and found what appears to be the same issue in Gem 65:

http://cgi.ebay.com/1862-100-CONFED...em51843f63dd

If it is the same note on ebay for under $800, then I can't see listing this with Stack's. Most auction houses add a 15% Buyer's Premium (juice) AND deduct 15% from the buyer's bid before the premium is added in. The consignee (seller) then realizes 30% less than the actual price paid by the buyer.

Please enlighten me if I'm mistaken about your note, but items valued under $1,000 are best sold outright IMHO.

There serial number on the note itself is #2? Why didn't you get the first one?

I won't quit my day job.

So they were handwritten on there. That's pretty cool.

Heritage might have a larger following....but Stack's is offering to feature it to confederate specialty crowd....
both are excellent choices....best of luck!

I'd lean toward Heritage but I'm not a paper currency seller. Do you know if the #2 serial number will bring a premium?

It looks like a very nice note to only be graded VF.

Well I just talked to Heritage and they require a minimum consignment of $5000. I asked him what he thought the value would be and he said between the $2000 and $4500 range. I guess I'll go with Stacks and will watch the auction live at the Philadelphia Expo.

the Number 2 serial will definitely what will bring the interest in this note. I think #1 always got put up for museums and such so the first one available to the public would be #2 of any design change. I am not a note collector so I could be wrong in this but that is what I remember reading awhile back. I am not sure about the plane numbers though so that may also be something that you would need to look at
