I purchased a roll of beautifuly toned 1966 lincoln cents a few years ago contained in a plastic cents tube from the seller. Each coin is consistent with beautiful toning. I purchased this roll from someone on e-bay that typically did not (and has not since) sell many coins. My question is how can I tell whether or not these are business strike issues, or SMS cents? Typically, you either get 1965-1967 in change (business strike) or see them contained in the SMS holder (SMS), so it is not something I have had to comtemplate. I am considering sending some in for grading, and would want to make sure I receive the proper attribution.

The price for grading would exceed the value of the coin. Seem like you would be better off to buy a SMS and compare them yourself.

1st, Welcome to the family, now, I do not think any TPG'R would attribute those "rolled coins" as SMS coins, not seeing the container from the you S Mint they came in with your coins inside those original you S Mint packages.
I would also state the coins you have in a roll, are most likely NOT from the original SMS packages, therefore I would feel the coins you have are well struck business strikes, being I do not think the you S Mint placed the SMS coins in rolls, I believe the only way you could of obtained the SMS coins were only in the packages. The SMS coins were proof-like, but not exactly proof they were better than a business strike, more of a mirror finish, not like the proof, but proof-like. I hope you can relate to what I am saying, good luck, Mike....

I also can not picture anyone removing SMS coins from the Packages and placing them in rolls, this is just my opinion, good luck, Mike....

While your statement is probably correct, you can't know that for sure without seeing the coins or knowing what grades they would receive.

I can never get these the right size, even though they say they are the same size! Nevertheless, this coin is a whopper and looks so much better than pics. All of the detail distorts the beauty of this coin with some minor scratches under fine magnification.

Should be a + RB in whatever numerical grade PCGS would give it. I would rather have it as a non SMS cent anyway.

My SMS 1966 and 1967 nickels and dimes are in my two dansco albums. Pulled those straight from my $12 SMS set holders.
