One of my coin club buddies showed me his collection which is mostly foreign but had a few US.....one of them appears to be a 1982 zinc penny without the copper coating! Is this a rare unreported error?
I have no pics----the coin looks just like any other UNC 1982 penny
except is missing the copper coating!

Thanks for your opinions

Hard to say without seeing it. Could be an error, could be plated with something else, could have been a science experiment.

Yes, zinc planchets can miss the plating process before being struck. I own an unplated error myself and there are many more alterations floating around than the real errors. A zinc Lincoln should have luster and visible die flow lines, those are the two best indicators of a genuine error and are not present when the coin has been plated post-mint.

Not common, but not exceedingly rare either.

Thing is, these are easy to fake, plate, and make to look pretty good.
