This has likely been answered but I could not find it in the search so I will ask here. My dansco has the P & D along with the clad proof and silver proofs. Speaking only of the clad proofs; would I just need to buy the 5 coin set for each year and break it open? Just wondering if there are any other options.

Sure you could. Same coins. And surely cheaper than buying them individually.

Here's why you "don't" want to do that....IMO. At least, only if you collect other Moderns as well, like the Nickels, Dimes, Sac's, Lincolns, and the Kennedys. If you buy the entire Proof Set, with all the years coins, then you can fill in the holes on the other Dansco's that you have....or will have in the future. You're gonna need those Proof Lincolns, those Proof Dimes, etc. etc. etc. And so just buying the 5 coin Set, won't get you those. And it's much much cheaper to just buy the full year Set, if your intentions are to do this. * If the only Modern album you have or will ever want, is this St. Qtr. with Proof Dansco....then yeah.....i'd say just buy the 5 coin Proof Sets. But if you're ever gonna want a Dansco Lincoln or a Jefferson album, or a Dansco Kennedy, a Dansco Native Dollar, etc. etc., then YOU'RE GOING TO WANT THOSE OTHER COINS TOO ! ...

And if you do buy them individually, that's what the guy you bought them from did. (Crack a set)

I agree with eaglefoot. If you are going to collect more than the quarters, now or in the future. Then you should look at buying the complete proof set. The killer right now for clad proofs ( State Quarter years) is the 2008. The 5 coin quarter set is running around $50.00 and the whole set is around $75.00, yes in clad. The site a buy a lot through has the whole 10 year run for $199.00, of 5 coin sets. For me I buy whole proof sets and break them for my albums, put the ones I don't use away.

I took your advice and have started buying the 10 coin sets. I have danscos for the rest so I may as well pay a little more up front to get them all taken care of. So far I have the 2000 set. The lowest price I can find on the 2001 set is $40 and will probably pull the trigger on that one tonight.

I wonder how much plastic and energy the government could save by offering the proof coins in cello wrap in addition to hard plastic. Also, I have never broken the plastic to remove proof coins. Is there any trick to it? I'm looking for any excuse to get my dremel out!

I cannot recall when it changed exactly, but the more recent proof sets are extremely easy to open; they are just snapped together. Run a blade along the edge and it will just pop open. They will close back just as easy.
I want to say they changed from the old quasi-sealed lenses in the mid to late nineties. Still, those lenses only need a utility knife and minimal effort to open. Unlike the current lenses, it will be obvious that these were opened.

johnstac I like this site. http://app.vendio.com/storefront?vi...atId=2880093He seem to have a good availability of coins. I use them as a sort of guide. If I can find a better price, I feel I did good .. If I can't find a better price .. I order from them. $40.00 sounds like a good price for that 2001 set

I spent the better part of the day scouring the net including ebay and froogle. Here is what I paid for each set with shipping included. I will comment on the 2008 set below: 1999 (9 coins) - $ 34.12 2000 (10 coins) - $ 12.50 2001 (10 coins) - $ 47.00 2002 (10 coins) - $ 19.95 2003 (10 coins) - $ 17.95 2004 (11 coins) - $19.95 2005 (11 coins) - $10.95 2006 (10 coins) - $19.99 2007 (14 coins) - $34.99 I visited many, many dealer sites but in the end, it was still cheaper to use the "Buy it Now" feature on ebay and used it for all but one set. I was rather enjoying myself as I searched to find the best price. That was until I started looking for the 2008 set. I am still having sticker shock with the very lowest price for the clad set at $80! Since all of these coins are going into albums, I don't think it's worth the money to buy a clad set. I may just fill both state holes with silver! In 40 years when I'm dead and gone, I think my kids will appreciate that it's all silver anyway! Will they take them out of the dansco to weigh them for clad? Lol. I'm just to cheap to pony up $80 for clad when the silver is almost half the price. (Done with soap box....)

.....you've run into a common problem....and one of the several reasons why so many coin collectors have "empty holes" in albums ! .... Staying current with each release from the Mint helps ! You can "wait until the Set is cheaper on the secondary market"...... or you run the risk that it will "rise in value and become unaffordable". In time you may see the prices come down on this Set, whether individually or the whole Set. And "down the road" you will be able to fill those holes. You should check your local area for coin shops.....this would be much cheaper than ebay with shipping/handling fees.....Paypal fees....or whatever fees !
