While sorting a new collection, I found this piece.

#1 looks like it was double mush print, or a slide of some sort.
#2 is the normal note
As I just purchased my first paper collection, any information otherwise would be helpfull too.

I don't imagine the Japanese occupation authorities would have been overly concerned about the quality of the notes. I have a few (Dollars, Pesos and Rupees) in my collection and there's a big variation in quality of paper and the printing.

So this one is Japanese Occupation currency. 100 Dollars (for use in Malaya during WWII). M with vertical upstroke and downstroke variety; VG 0.25; VF 2.00; Unc 6.00.

Here's a picture of the other variety with a slanting M vertical upstroke and downstroke value is even less!

The ink could have smeared- this is, I believe, a lithographed issue, rather than an engraved bill. The ink could have been poor quality, or it could be a counterfeit bill- many counterfeits exist of this series. Ink on counterfeits can spread with a little water. The bill could have been put in a stack before the ink had dried, giving the smear. Quality control was not the best in the JIM issues, which were used in several areas- Malaya, Burma, Dutch East Indies, Oceania, Philippines.

How do you tell the difference.

How easy is it to spot counterfeit bills

Some 1957 US $1 silver certificates have a similar issue and are considered errors and called "Inverted W".

The "W" was used as a "M" turned upside down in the SN prefix.

Peace
