I've just bought the 1976 six coin US Mint set at a local market. Price, £7.00. Seems reasonable, but why is the set selling so cheaply on ebay and elsewhere when the individual coins are ccorrespondingly more expensive?

Proof sets almost always sell for less than the sum of the individual coins.

Many people only collect one series. Buying the whole set means having to dispose of the extra coins. Most often a person will pay more to get the one coin they want; which would still be less than buying the whole set (and having other coins they do not want).

Thank you. It doesn't work quite the same way on the Dark Side.

The price is so low for that set might have some thing to do with the high mintage for that set due to it being our bicentennial. Possibly?
