I have a very attractive 1931-? Mercury dime and evidently when I purchased it over 20 years ago, I purchased it as a 1931-d. As I was looking at coin, the mint mark is undisgtinguishable, I thougt some physical damage, no, a D/S, can't tell, the die just put down a blob, rather mint mark. Can anyone shed some light, please. Can't do pictures, sorry. thanks for any help.

Hi Berry

Without a pic the best that can be done is a bit of conjecture,, My resource material does not list an OMM for 1931 ,, however you should check that date for a DDO Doubled Die obverse.

your coin could be a D mint coin if the center post which would create the center portion of the D was chipped or broken, then the Mint mark could look like a blob rather than a clear D.

Hi Rick, the explanation you gave about the center portion of the D was chipped or broken, then the mint mark could look like a blob rather than a clear D. If you could visualize a D mint mark, then have a blob, with the 9 - 12 O'clock portion pressed up and away from the main body of the mint mark thats what this does look like.
To my untrained eye, it is just a blob with the upper left quadrant pushed out. I will have to get someone to show me how to input photos into the forumn. Thanks Rick.
