With decades of pure nickel 5-cent pieces and very high prices for the metal, are the coins being melted for scrap today? Has this ever been done in the past when nickel prices rose?

Any links or articles would be appreciated.

I don't now if this guy is melting them down but he references canadian coin nickel content quite a bit on his website. Very interesting site even though it's not about coins per se.

Did you read about mercury? If it wasn't so dangerous, it would be a blast to play around with. I remember a kid that brought a bunch of it to school and we all played with it, never knowing the danger.

What's the nickel worth in a Canadian nickel?

Hard to find out exactly what one nickel would be worth, would have to do a lot of math. Todays spot price for nickel is $12.0051 per pound.

Argh. I assume that is 16 ounces, so, rounding here, $12/16=.75 an oz.

One canadian nickel weighs 3.95 grams, so, there are 28.349 grams to 16 ounces. Which makes 1 gram worth approx. .026 cents. Which would make a canadian nickel worth 3.95 x .026 = .1027 cents

So, each canadian nickel is worth .10 cents today (that is 10 cents American). The prices change daily. So realistically it is better to have lots of pounds of nickel or nickels.

:)

I hope I calculated all of this correctly.

The melter of Canadian nickel coins is the Canadian Mint. They are selectively culling nickel coins from circulation, melting them, and making another profit.

I hope they don't get too carried away. My wife (mostly me though) is trying to put a set together and if they melt them all down it will be hard to get a set together. :(
