I think that if the story is true, at least one of the dealers would have recommended that the coin be sent to a TGP such as ANACS, NGC, or PCGS.
I'm not saying I think it is fake (or real, for that matter). But doesn't it make sense to to do something to *know* if it is real?

Thanks, Moe, I didn't even look at the coin... :)

If you know that your 1877 IHC is real, you would be pretty crazy not to send it to a TPG first for verification since key dates tend to get a much better price when in plastic, especially on coins that are commonly faked.

I know nothing of this coin type, but the date looks funny. "Ha-ha" funny.

Here's a side-by-side comparison with one of the genuine coins from the other thread. Notice the distance between the sarifs on the top of the "N" and the "E"

Based on the reverse I would say it is a FAKE. All the genuine 1877 I've ever seen show the weakness in the "N" in cent. I would not buy that coin for that reason alone.

Particularly interesting is how the denticles are actually formed 'on' the rim.

Are there any known 1877 DDR's? The coin in the listing has wicked doubling on the reverse.

Quote: but the date looks funny The 7s in the pictured coin do not have the same font as the true 7s. Compare these 7s to the ebay coin:

I'm also fairly certain, for reasons outlined above, that the coin in the posted ebay auction is not genuine.

QUOTE: Are there any known 1877 DDR's? The coin in the listing has wicked doubling on the reverse. There are NO known DDR on the 1877's, all the dies are carefully gone thru in Rick Snow's book of Indian cent varieties. This is not to say there can't be some Longacre doubling going on though.
