Not sure about you guys but I'm looking at the US mint subscription page and it has 13 listings which can be further broken down to about 30 additional items. In the past I have just bought what I liked but many of those items are now worth about 1/2 what I paid. It would be nice to have some clue as to what might be worth more in the future.

In particular today, I was studying all of the ways I can spend money on the America the Beautiful sets. 3-packs, 10 packs, uncirculated, circulating, proof sets, silver proof sets, rolls, bags, etc.... It's analysis paralysis for me. Without seeing the coins, it's hard to know in advance whether I will buy a dansco for this theme or not. It would just be interesting to know what will be worth triple its face value a year from now. Is there an educated means of determining this?

I think if we knew the answer to this, there wouldn't be anything that would triple face a year from now.

I don't think any of those items are likely to be a big hit. New mint products are widely available and purchased directly by the collectors that want them and dealers for sale on top of that. Especially when it comes to the quarter series which even non regular collectors dip their hands into.
Rest in Peace

I look at most of the offerings from the mint as having the same relative value - esthetically and intrinsically - as Beanie babies. I didn't invest in them, either.

Scott Travers book on coin survival guide I believe mention that the US mint is not a good place to invest, that is for investor/collector. I believe most of us are.

Its hard to pin point which series will go up in value, perhaps when the mint says there's only 50,000 sets available and one per household.

I doubt anything will be worth triple it's purchase price but my vote for the biggest hit is the 5oz silver.
Rest in Peace

I agree there'll probably be a buzz about the Lincoln coin when it comes out because he is one of the most popular presidents but I don't see there being long term value there any more than the other new issues. If anything you could say that because he is so popular even more people will purchase/hoard his coins.

It always seems to me that new issues are all about perceived rarity and/or temporary shortages. It's fun and exciting when they first come out and people can't wait to get their hands on them and have a hard time finding them the price quickly climbs, but at the end of the year there's still been however many tens of millions made and once distribution catches up the flash in the pan goes away and makes way for the next years "hard to find" coin.

The other big attraction for people into moderns obviously is the slabbed super high grade and error coins and more or less a lot of those follow a similar path though they will end up with some lasting value.

The major distinction is whether you're the person making the money off of finding and selling the coins early or the person buying them at the initial super prices and watching them fall later. If you want to try to "make" money you can try and play the speed game but chances are you will get beat out by all the big dealers etc who order loads of coins every year and are probably most likely to get their hands on them first and have distribution channels to sell them.

I ask for a silver proof set every year for christmas because I like having a nice example of every coin for the year. I would advise doing the same, get just what you want to be part of your collection for collections sake and don't buy a bunch of extras for an investment and bet on anything suddenly exploding in value and staying there.

As for the Abe so far, I have heard that an extremely low number of Lincoln Proofs are grading PR-69, let alone PR-70... There was supposedly problems with making them... So before the price jumps through the roof, I am jumping on one ASAP...

I dont see the park quarter silver proof sets jumping to even twice the release price. The mint will not have shortages of them as they did with the 1999 issue.

Captain kurk those hsn guys said the reason those 1999 silver state qtrs are so valuable was simply because they had been out longer than the rest of them & that they were the first in the series I just checked the Red Book on the mintages and like you said they are a lower mintage than the rest of the 1999 silver sets cant believe everything you hear from those guys thanks for the info.

the 99 silver set is valuable b/c they did not release the quarters separately. the only way to get the silver quarters was to buy the silver set. all other years offered the silver quarters separately
