You see, It's kinda like this. I was at a local Flea market today. While looking at a few coins in a display case, the dealer says "there, another silver dollar belt buckle ready" as He sits there polishing a Morgan silver dollar nice and bright. I'm not saying saying that he cleans and polishes them all, maybe just the ones for the buckles. Somehow, between the polishing and past conversations and overheard comments, I will be doubting his credibility. One less dealer that will get my business until I learn more about identifying these sorts of things.

definitely a shadowy situation... In the Coin World it's better to be safe than sorry... Education is always the key in identifying cleaned coins... And good choice educating yourself...

Sounds like a smart choice.

(Unfortunately) This is all too common, shinny is not a good thing unless it's a proof, proof like, or deep mirror proof most of the time.

I had a Morgan silver dollar belt buckle when I was a kid. My dad bought one for me and one for himself on vacation one year. I still have the coin although I took it out of the belt buckle. It got pretty beat up in that old belt buckle... I guess given the large number of common date Morgans out there, there could be worse fates than to end up in a belt buckle.

I have seen them for sale, but never seen anyone wear one. Either no one wears them, or I just don't stare at people's pants enough. :O)

I have a Morgan dollar Necklace given to my mother by my father in the 70's, in quite a beatifull setting, but I do not like coins being treated like that Coins are mot supposed to be made into anything else IMO.
