I recently bought this V nickel and promptly put it back up for auction as I had another UNC that was brighter. The more I look at this one though, the more Rodney Dangerfields I do because it has characteristics of a proof. Help please! Give me some of your thoughts as to proof or non-proof.

One other thing about the coin. It has a kind of bronze "glow" to it instead of a shine. Not a typical finish for an UNC. Paleoguy

I vote UNC (business strike), too; my opinion only; too.

Here is PCGS's image of a proof.

Definitely a business strike 1905. The strike is not strong enough for a proof of the '00 era vintage since the proof production methods had significantly improved from '87-'89 strikes. When in doubt check the hair above Liberty's ear, the hair should be separated and rounded, and the two ears of corn on the reverse. Both ears will show corn detail in sharp relief. You are not far off in assuming that proof V's can be this dull due to the 75% copper content of the coin, which can yellow the white nickel surface easily. I have spent about 15 years assembling a blast white cameo proof set of Liberty Heads and still have 7 coins to go, so in that interim I have seen several thousand proof V nicks.

I'd say AU-58, some slight wear on the stars and in the hair. Nice coin.
