I was wondering if any of the Peace dollar experts have come across a 1923 Peace that has been as hard struck like this one? Belongs to a friend of mine and when I saw the relief on the reverse top letters and on the word "Trust" on the obverse on it was very surprising. All of the other ones I have seen are real mushy Terry Edited by stewart 07/06/2010 3:14 pm

As far as I know there was no "high relief" made in '23 only in '21 & '22. What you have is probably a "full strike" coin. John1

That was my original thought John, no high relief that year, so just a well struck coin. Notice the weak "Peace" though, pretty standard.

Thank you for the reply's guys. I should not have used the words "High Relief" I just have never seen a 23 Peace so hard struck All of the ones I have seen The words at the top of the reverse and the word "TRUST" on the obverse are always very mushy The word "PEACE" at the bottom looks different in hand. The bottom of the reverse is darker due to lighting.

22 and 23 are generally pretty nice coins. Easy to find much nicer even than that one My Peace dollars started as something to hunt when I couldnt find a Morgan I wanted. Now the Peace coins are really growing on me. Some people dont care for then, I find them beautiful.

I think it's a nice looking coin! I'd be proud to own it!

I've never seen one with E PLURIBUS UNUM that sharply struck with a raised rounded relief.

"I've never seen one with E PLURIBUS UNUM that sharply struck with a raised rounded relief." That is the club that I am in. It blew me away the first time I saw it. I used to be very much into Morgan and Peace dollar VAM's Then seriously got into Eisenhower Varieties. and looked at hundreds of Peace dollars at the five local coin shops and online and have not even seen that many 1921 and High Relief 1922's with that kind of raised roundness to the letters on the reverse. and in the last three letters of "TRUST" on the obverse. Golly, that thing is hammered. I almost have to wonder if it's a trial strike.

Would this be a thicker then normal planchet, therefore a better strike?

oober, For the thickness question, Just a hair over 2mm thick I took some close-ups of the normally mushy areas on Peace dollars. They are not the best Wish I had a stereo microscope. But we use what we have. Terry
