A
Cud is a specific type of die break affecting the face and shank of a die and it is an indicator of a die near the point of failure. Since the shank of a die must be affected, all
Cuds will emanate from the rim towards the center of the coin, anything else is a common die chip or a less-common interior die break. When the coin is struck, the planchet fills the void in the die and that is how you get a "blob" of metal. Since part of the obverse die is broken away, the two dies do not create a full opposing force against each other- that is the source of the opposite side weakness.
