I know the possibilities are quite slim.....near impossible, but something about the surfaces of this dollar are strange/different. Would anyone here be able to tell me how to determine a regular 1922 Peace from a 1922 Matte Proof? The surfaces are smooth and matte on both the obverse and reverse. Thanks

I look at this coin and the first thought that enters my mind is that someone has peaned this with a glass bead blaster. It is a process similar to sand blasting but glass beads are used and are so small that they are measured in microns. The surface just does not look natural at all to me, it is just too white. It could just be the pics themselves or my old eyes.

Those are scans. The coin is an even grey.

Not a chance, a matte proof still shares most of the qualities of a regular proof- hammered strike and sharp squared rims. The mintage for 1922 is estimated at a dozen and 8-10 are known, it is an incredibly rare and very valuable coin.
