Thank you for sharing your mystery with us. My first thought was that: Things happened for a reason. So, now we need to find out what that reason is....

Let start with the date: The crate stored in your house since 1984 and both of these coins are minted after 1984, hence, whomever put them into that crate need to have access to that crate (inside your house). IE: Ask your immediate family, like jbuck said.

Did you check the seal to see if the crate was opened before?

Do you have a sleep walking habit? ..... j/k

If you believed in after life and super nature then: Your dad decided to come back and visit his coins.... while on his way to your house, he stopped by the coin shop and pick up those two coins from the "bargain bin" (which he paid with "underworld monies" - check local newspaper of 1988/1989/1990 for report of coin shop lost 2 coins and found "underworld monies" in the cash register).... after enjoying his coin collection, your dad realized that he can't take the two coin with him so he left them there for you. ***How's that for a ghost story?***

Just enjoy the coins!

Well just delightful. thanks to all of you for such a warm and entertaining series of answers. Kind of like "toppers" night at the beer parlor.

And thanks jbuck for your courteous concern, but it is entirely misplaced. I'm right as rain.

Award so far goes to AS4H. Come to think of it, I think I might have awoken a couple of times over the years to the sound of jingling change. I just couldn't quite place it.

And nothing stirs the heartstrings more than the image of my old man sitting in the back of his store at his large old wooden table stacked on all corners with precisely inventoried specie of all denomination peering through a large magnifier at each individual coin as if it were some exotic and beautiful butterfly that might, at any moment, fly from his grasp. For years, no matter when I came in, he would look up at me with glee and say, "Hey Max, come here and let me show you what I found today!"

...and the journey proceeds.

Is it possible that you forgot to place a couple coins with him, when he passed on.

In mythology, family members were suppose to place a coin or two with their departed relative,
so that he could pay the boatman for the ride down the river Styx. This is where all departed souls were suppose to go.

Maybe the coins showing up, is his way to show you that he did not have coins with him.

I better write a note out .. so my daughter does not forgot to put a couple of coins with me
when my time comes.
