Someone on Coin Community recently indicated that the mintmarks on Buffalo nickels pre 1909 were manually placed on the dies which supposedly causes very slight variations in the geographic placement of these mintmarks. The size of the mintmarks, however, should be the same no matter whether it is pre 1909 or post 1909.

I have a similar question about Lincoln wheaties. Does this same logic apply to Lincoln wheat cents? If so, please tell me where to find additional info. about this subject.

Finally, please tell me if you think the mintmark on the attached 1911-S Lincoln Cent appears to be authentic.

It wouldn't be the exact same mint mark die on every coin minted that year. It would wear out just as the dies for the coins do. I am sure there were some diviations in each of the MM dies used each year.

There were no Buffalo nickels minted prior to 1913.

1911-S doesn't strike me as a date/MM to counterfeit. It's a lower end semi-key date. I'd be more worried about 09 S VDB, 31S, 22 plain, 14D

They were manually placed on the dies until, about 1990 or so, I forget the date when they placed the MM on the master die.

From then on, no more RPM's.

If you want a lot of info on the Lincoln Cent mint mark subject, you may try to get ahold of a copy of The Authoritative Reference on Lincoln Cents, 2nd edition, by John Wexler and Kevin Flynn. It just came out last year.

I'm sure it's legit. It wouldn't be worth the trouble to counterfeit unless the coin as MS64 up.

Looks like the real deal to me. Treashunt is correct 1989 was the last year of the hand applied MM. WOLF
