Odd penny:

1. Silver color though it appears to be plated. It's also slick to the feel.

2. Rounded band encircles the Rim making the edge round rather than flat or squared. It is larger in diameter, too.

3. Obverse is Slightly off-centered.

4. Letters on obverse touch the rim in places such as the last T in trust and the L in Liberty. The T in trust is actually flattened a bit at the top.

5. The date is closer to the rim than my comparison 58D.

6. The bottom of the bust almost touches the rim instead of the clear separation on the regular 58D.

Any thoughts?

Maxie

My guess is chrome plated or maybe mercury and it looks like it was encased in a piece of jewelry.

Slick? Mercury. We used to coat 'em in third grade, right in the classroom. Nowadays that would be good for a day off while the hazmat team cleaned up the area; back then, it was just cheap fun, second only to putting nickels on the Missouri Pacific tracks that ran through town.

By the way, Mazie, that "jewelry" might be hazardous to your health. Just sayin'.

It's more than likely plated using the galvanic process. Probably a tin/zinc mixture, since their closer on the scale. But maybe chrome. Chrome is expensive though.

To what does anyone attribute the physical difference of the coin? Encasing it in jewelry wouldnt change the shape of the rim unless the encaser wanted to modify the coin to fit the jewelry, which is plausible, I'm sure; but not very likely.
