Recently a pawn shop in my town began selling coins. They now have a box of world coins for 25 cents a piece. I know that this particular shop is new to the business of selling coins and I just want to know what I should look for in this box. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. It is greatly appreciated.

If you're thinking of starting a world coin collection then maybe you can come to some arrangement with the owner for a discount if you're planning on buying a lot.
A lot of pre-1945 coins that look like the modern cupro-nickels were made of silver.
Apart from that just pick the ones that you like the look of.

If you are looking to pick up silver and possibly gold on the cheap then use this site to identify those coins.

I picked up about half of my world coins in my travels and purchased the others over the years. I collect the world coins because they are more artfully designed than our modern US coinage.

I feel that $.25 each is a little steep. Try and negotiate a better deal, say 5 or 6 for a $1. If I new I could get $.25 each I would be rich. I have about 30lbs in a bucket that has been sitting on my desk for nearly a year waiting for me to go through them. Some day I'll get to them....................Maybe.

I would suggest that you go to a used book store first and try to locate copies of Krause's World Coins. Older copies are cheap and you can "know" what to look for. I see nothing wrong with bringing your book to the Pawn Shop and checking what they have.

The owner of the shop should have done the same thing already so I can see no objection other than the time you might take and the space you occupy at the counter.
