I received word yesterday from David Levy of the passing of my good friend Dave Sunderland.

Dave has been my friend for over 10 years. He and I were both employed by Ma Bell as engineers, but it was our mutual interest in early Spanish American 8R coins that brought us into contact.

Dave Levy is the Editor of "Os Recunhos de 960 reis, The 960 Reis Overstrikes". Dave Sunderland was a contributor and English translator of the book. We corresponded at length about the counterfeit versions of the 960 reis and I like to think I helped in the final version of that portion of the book. Dave S. gave me a signed copy when it was published in 2002.

Dave was a meticulous numismatist who delighted in discovering new die varieties. He also had an appreciation for the early counterfeits and we spent many pleasant hours discussing the techniques that were visible as clues on the coins themselves. We had similar backgrounds and interests in metallurgy, manufacturing and engineering.

He will be missed.
