Sets that become worth more are sets that include a coin or a finish (satin for example)that can only be fount by purchasing the set. While I know this isn't true for all cases, it does make sense. Having said that, when looking at this 2009 36 coin uncirculated set, do any of you see the value in just the fact that they are uncirculated? I don't know enough about the 2009 year as to whether all of those coins were offered in UNC condition. Thoughts?

Well, the Uncirculated Mint Sets are ALL Satin Finish coins.....so I suppose they're unique in that way.
The 2009 Cents contained therein are also Copper, so that will set it apart from recent issues.
But there are no Business Strikes contained in the Mint Sets anymore. So when you buy a Mint Set, they'll always be "Uncirculated Satin Finish" coins.
The only way to get business strike coins are from "Two Roll Sets"....."Roll searching from banks"...or your daily pocket change.

The 2009 Uncirculated Satin Finish Set will indeed contain coins that are all "Uncirculated". However, it's a lot harder to find high grade "business strikes" from "the wild" than it is the Satin finish coins contained in the Sets for obvious reasons.

What makes me really crazy is what the mint is now offering "circulated" business strikes, satin finish "uncirculated" strikes and the two types of proofs with the State Parks program, ostensibily to earn more seignorage from us gullible coin collectors, who demand more uniformity of product offerings instead of extended confusion. The 2009 mint set was particularly egregious, since hardly anyone understood that the eight cents were unique in the 95/5 composition unlike the business strikes. Once Linclon Cent collectors are aware of this difference the 2009 will go way up like the 2008 set if it hasn't already.

Another avenue is to buy the 2009 copper cents from a dealer or online. I was able to get most of them from roll searching but was missing a couple of them and that is how I filled out my 2009 circulated/business strike collection. They were not expensive from the dealer ($.50 per). Some here will undoubtedly find that price ridiculous but I found it equitable for high quality examples.

Here is how I looked at the 2009 Lincoln cents. Keep in mind I have been at this a grand total of 7 months.

To have a complete set of 2009 Lincoln cents I needed to get the following:

1. All 4 Circulated Business Strike P&D coins (8 coins)
2. All 4 Uncirculated Satin Finish P&D coins (8 coins)
3. All 4 Proof Finish coins (4 coins)

I accomplished this by the following methods.

1. Purchased 2 2009 US Mint Proof Sets (Clad Proof)
2. Purchased 2 2009 US Mint Uncirculated Coin Sets
3. Roll Searching for the Business Strikes until I purchased the rest from a local dealer

Why 2 sets? -- I kept one set each for my collection and the rest went towards filling in folders/albums.

I have heard various opinions on the potential value of the 2009 Lincoln cents or the various 2009 mint sets. I am new enough to not even try to speculate on the value. They do stand out in both design and metal composition. Time will tell.

Mint sets of the past seem to be pretty big losers from a value perspective.

To be clear I am more of pack-rat collector than a value collector. If I buy an album or folder my brain cannot rest until all the holes are filled. I do buy pieces that I think will be valuable later but it is such a gamble that I rarely pull the trigger.

I think the Lincoln collectors are aware of the difference. The 2009 set is still at $35. I think it may go up for a different reason: many of these sets have been chopped for the 8 coin Lincolns in 95% copper.
