Issued in 1947, just two years from end of WWII, with Manila as one of the most devastated and bombed cities of the world.

The first crown sized silver coin, issued after independence by the Rep of the Philippines, celebrates Gen. Douglas McArthur as shown Obv.

Great coin with a lot of history of sacrifices, blood, sweat and tears, all rolled into one coin

I have always wondered why the coin design artist placed two flowers with two leaves each on the Rev?

Perhaps the flowers represent the sampaquita (Arabian jasmine) the national flower of the Philippines.

This illustrates one of my strongest connections to this hobby and a big reason I enjoy coinage so much... tangible history.

His famous quote 'I Shall Return' should have been included in the design.

I checked on sampaguita, and your right Thai-vic, thanks for the lead.

Here's the link to the sampaguita flower (Jasmine) site

http://wayofdesign.com/blog/?tag=sampaguita

the artist must have reffered the sampaguita flower to the words of Gen. MacArthur "I shall return" because the filipino word "Sampaguita" is derived from the words "sumpa kita" which means "I promise you"
