I know this probably depends on the individual coins, But...For CC Morgans-Is a GSA pedigree noted on the slab worth the extra $$? And what are your thoughts on the GSA boxes certified by NGC as opposed to those coins slabbed without the box? Thanks, Bill

GSA noted on the slab adds no value from my viewpoint.

Original GSA holders with the NGC certified "banding" is worth something, but I would not pay a large premium for it.

As always, buy the coin and not the slab but original GSA holders do have some added value.

Original GSA holders add value to the coins, designation on a TPG holder does not in my humble opinion. As to how large of a premium, depends on the coin itself. It is a lot more difficult to locate an 1879cc in MS65 in a GSA holder, hence the large premium. Realize the GSA holders are sought after by more than just Morgan dollar collectors. There are many people who collect Carson City memorabilia of all kinds. Among my circle of close collector friends all of us have a set of GSA CC dollars in the GSA holders but only 2 of the 8 collect Morgan dollars by date. The GSA dollars have a historical significance that makes them a unique subset to collecting. dollars.

Not to mention, the pool of GSA Morgans becomes smaller every year because those who don't believe in their added value are cracking them out for more "favorable" holders. The naysayers themselves are the ones creating the added value.

If you find a non-CC in a GSA holder, then you have a real gem. Some of those coins sell for a 3-4x premium or even higher.

I hadn't really thought about those that "crack" them out.

For the CC's it depends somewhat on the date. In the case of 82- 83- and 84-CC, a large portion of the original mintage was actually released in the GSA sales. When you see one of these dates, even if it is not noted on the slab, there is a pretty fair chance that the coin was in a GSA slab at some time in it's life.

Keep it in the GSA holder. If you must have 3rd party grading send it to NGC so the coin stays in the holder.

Don't think I have ever seen a empty GSA holder on ebay. I have seen empty boxes but never seen a empty case that was an original GSA case. I believe you would tear them up removing the original coin and wouldn't be worth trying to sell because anyone could tell it wasn't original, or had been tampered with
