I suddenly find myself interested in world banknotes. Much like coinage, their aesthetics and subject matter interest me. I do know that, like anything, I should read up on them first. My question is about acquiring a nice sampling of notes to look at. Those bulk lots on ebay... I assume there isn't anything of any value in them, but are they good enough just to have some notes to peruse and learn?

I will not have hardly any funds for the banknote portion of my little hobby (as what paltry sum I do have available will go mostly to coinage,) so are those ebay lots worth buying at all?

Also, it seems that those random lots go for about .20 to .35 cents per note. Is that "acceptable" or should I look elsewhere.

and yes, 25 to 30 cents is a pretty good price for random world banknotes

I bought some from E-Bay. I think it was $10 for 15 notes. They were all crisp uncirculated notes. Nothing valuable, but they are very nice. I think it's a great way to start. I'm shooting for one from every country.

Thanks. I think I will buy a lot and look through them. If nothing else, maybe the kids will have fun looking at them with me.

Bulk lots are a good way to start but the more you buy the more duplicates you'll tend to get. However the 25/30 cents each seems a fairly reasonable price.
Don't forget to look for varieties in signatures and dates. Signatures are pretty easy to compare but dates can sometimes be hard to find on a note. If you're looking to collect Arabic notes then learn the Arabic numbers and dating system. This will help you identify varieties.
Good luck with the start of your newest collection. You'll probably already know that if you have any problems with identification then post 'em here.

I tend to find more interesting stuff in the circulated lots than the uncirculated ones. The unc lots are usually filled with Yugoslavian inflationary, Indonesian, Bulgarian, German inflationary, Chinese ration coupons, Japanese Invasion Money and other dirt-common (currently, anyway) issues with extremely low values.
In circulated lots I've gotten some really neat stuff, including Netherlands Antilles, Russian Czarist notes, South Vietnamese, South African, Belgian, Egyptian, Syrian, Cuban, Mexican Revolutionary, Turkish, Turkmenistan....

SPQR - I appreciate that tip. I am trying to find an inexpensive "introductory" lot to buy and that helps.

Are those crisp uncirculated notes legit that come in those bulk lots? Like the Chinese ration coupons, British Military money or Indonesian bank notes from pre-1970.

Well, after much procrastination and indecisiveness, I purchased one of those (uncirculated) bulk lots. I paid 5.91 for 25 notes (shipping included) or $0.24 per note. They should be here in a couple days and I will report on what is in there (nothing special I know.) I am not expecting to find anything "valuable." I just wanted to see some different notes in hand. Then I will try and decide on a direction for my little collection. I am leaning toward Africa at the moment, but we'll see.

I may try a circulated lot as well as some of my ebay stuff sells.
