The note is an Assignat of France, during the revolutionary period, of the 5th creation (probably series)dated Nov 1, 1791. (The third issue of 1791- Pick A50.)It is worth 5 livres, in the old French system of deniers/sous, sols, and livres, similar to the english system of pennies, shillings, and pounds. The Domains Nationaux were the lands confiscated from the Church and the Nobility. The stamp is of Louis XVI, Roi des Francois (King of the French People), where before the revolution he was Roi de France (King of France). There were, if my memory is correct, something like 12 different signatures on these bills. They became frequently counterfeited (from inside and outside France), as well as issued in hugely inflationary amounts, so their value eventually collapsed. The last catalogue I have shows them at G $3, F $6, and EF $15.

Thank you. Is there a simple way to identify
a counterfeit?
