Very general question here. If you had $150 and wanted to buy a Morgan, what would you go for? I'm thinking a semi-key in some kind of circulated grade rather than a more common date in UNC. I already have some common date MS-63s that I paid from $35 to $50 for, but want to try to get a better date. Thoughts?

Sorry old man, but that one is already over 200 bucks where I shop. Most guy won't come down either. When I get a little extra, I sock it away for one of my favorites that require more than I usually spend. OOOOORRRRR, Look at you collection, decide which of your favorite coins you'd like to upgrade. That way you can start a second collection of you favorite series. If you gotta have that 1890 CC, you'll probably get it somewhere in the VF to XF state.

Several of the Carson City Morgans are available in AU for $150. I'd look to those first.

If you only want "a Morgan," I'd agree with your opinion - a semi-key in the best grade possible.

I took a leap of faith and bought an 1886-S for $135. The guy called it AU, but I'm thinking more like a high XF. I'll try to get pics up.

Personally, I'd go for a "CC" in the best grade you could get for your $150.

Gothic Florin I was going to say a 1886-S because that's the one I'm looking for in AU or better. ebay had a few listed as AU but comparing them in Photograde they were no better than F-VF. Beginning to like some of the AU's as well as MS's. Did you buy yours on ebay recently? Maybe it was some I looked at also. edgman

okiepb - I am going to save up for GSA Morgans. I link the history behind them. I won't be able to afford a '90, '79 etc. but 81, 82, 83, 84 and 85 with some saving will be attainable. I may opt for a circulated '90 etc. next. I liked 86-S because the mintage is only 750,000 yet it is still an affordable coin.
