I collect them primarily through my Mint and Proof Set buys annually ... although I do keep some I find in the wild that look UNC. I also agree with others that the coins are not real attractive ... easily tarnish if handled improperly ... and I really do not like the Date and Mint marks on the edge vice face of the coin ... I prefer the raised date/mint mark on the face.

I think this was very poorly executed. They should have used the half dollar. CAC and the, I forget the other committee, and the mint really let this one flop.

I don't like them, but since I get all the mint sets, I have gone ahead and put them in Danscos.
I think they are sub-par in many ways, and I don't like the small dollars anyway.
Add to that, they will never be valuable.
So, yeah, I collect them in the loosest sense of the word.

carmykle and ratio411, Both of you make good points, the CFA and CCAC really missed the boat on these poor maligned dollars. They could have been really spectacular coins with striking designs, instead of the boring ugly portrait coins that we are stuck with. If you collect the annual sets these coins are foisted on you, and you are collecting them in a manner of speaking. It really feels like instead of a great series, these coins became just afterthoughts cranked out by the mint to make extra money. It is a major FAIL on both fronts, rarely used in commerce and disdained by collectors. Really too bad.

I collect for the following: - Easy to get at work through vending, I can get BU coins from change machine
- cheap, one buck per coin
- not the most attractive coin, but what the heck

I pick up 3 or 4 rolls of them each. I figure I'll never loose any money on them and they always have the possibility of becoming valuable someday. Although really I just like collecting all kinds of different money.

In asnwering another question on sets, I thought to myself that I have Ikes and SBAs... It is strange that I don't have the Sacs or Presidential dollars. I know I will regret this, but I may got of and purchase a new Dansco (or two). Will my poor JFK ever get completed?

I collect the Presidential dollars. They are not th Mint's finest work, But, I like them just the same. I buy mine from Coin shows, with now wear directly from the rolls. I keep them in a Whitman folder. They are not very expensive and In my opinion worth the time and effort to collect.

That Dansco Date Set is pretty cool. Since I get extra's of these with the Silver Proof sets I purchase I might check one of these out. Thanks for the link.

Quote: What does everyone think about just getting the "date set" Dansco. As the mint marks are hidden, you just get one coin, and move on. That is what I have settled on (I posted it on the previous page), but I am going to fill it with the proofs that I already have.

I have been collecting them so far I only have six but there fun, it will be nice once there all in a book to see all the presidents, and maybe it will be worth something when my grandkids are old but who knows, I'm mostly doing it because its one of the series that came out in my life time.

The Whitman date set album for these is equal to the Dansco in construction, and this is what I have. It's quite suitable to put the Proofs in there, and this is what I've been doing. I make a few "date set folders" as well....but really just for fun with those. I don't look at the Presidential dollars "too" disparagingly, because, mainly I view them as historical, a learning tool for youngsters, patriotic, and I agree that it's a series that we can start from the get-go, which nowadays is EVERY OTHER YEAR !! LoL Ha Ha .... The designs aren't all that wonderful it's true......and they might work best as a car wash token, but I tell you what....the "Proofs" are looking pretty good in my Whitman album ! And I just collect them because I like them.....it's a coin collecting "opportunity", and this is my nature to collect them, and I have a hope that those I leave behind one day, when I go to the Pearly Gates, will appreciate the efforts I made now... Coin collecting isn't always about money ! ....
