Wow! This must be a pattern proof coin? I wonder how many were made. If you saved and saved, I wonder ( not how much you paid but, ) how much this is worth. Really neat coin.

Thanks all, To answer a few questions, there were an estimated 300 of these made. Rick Snow wrote "It is scarce if compared to regular issue proofs of the copper-nickel years of the Indian cent, although usually priced a bit lower". I did get mine for significantly less than an 1859 Indian cent in Proof-64. Snow continues, "AIt is scarece enough for some dealers to hype and overstate its value. Comparisons to the 1856 Flying Eagle are one way this coin gets hyped out of proportion. Although the 1858 Indian cent is desirable as an extension to the series, it is not universally thought of as part of the regular set like the 1856 Flying Eagle is ... the lower demand translates to lower prices. In the past circulated examples have generally traded in the $500 to $1,000 range. MS and Proof examples trade from $1,000 to $3,000 in the 60 to 64 grades." Incredible coin! I was eyeballing one on ebay for a while, but it had a streak in it I didn't like. The one you bought is an excellent specimen! I think it fits nicely with the rest of your Indian collection! |

That is one really excellent Indian! Don't know if I will ever get to the point where I can collect premium proof Indians but I hope to some time. Congratulations on a wonderful coin!

Heck, I think it was a very wise goal and purchase on your part robbudo, You must be very happy and I am sure that it will pay off in time handsomly. I have to get my 1971 No S proof nickel. I just don't have the same determination. Thanks for showing this to us and for answering my questions. I would have guessed it was much more expensive.
