I promised to put these pics up months ago so Finally here they are.

This one I bought at an auction back in December for $135=10% PB. I can not believe it came back from ANACS with "cleaned" on it. Scratched, yes but I do not see anything to suggest cleaned.

This one is the one that my wife won at the annual October Coin Show in Goldsboro N.C. This $5 gold piece along with an ANACS graded 1958 proof set. Oh by the way, I gave her $20 bucks to by US five raffle tickets each. She put her name on all ten of them.

What do you guys think these should grade? Or do you think they are graded fairly?

Personally I find gold difficult to grade, period. Much less trying to gade using pics.

On the Indian apparently the professionals at ANACS did not see any signs of wear. But from the pics you can see where it looks like the cheek was scrubbed and on the eagles wing on the reverse which wore away part of the feather detail. So I would agree with the cleaning. The scratches on the reverse must be rather deep (or maybe the one on obv at 12o'clock.)

For the Liberty Head from the pics I can see some light wear on the point of the coronet and on the hair detail. The coin does appear tot be scratched and the scratch is distracting as it is in a focal area of the obv.

So overall I would tend to agree with ANACS on these.

Note: From what I have seen in the past ANACS seems to be more generous than NGC or PCGS on gold coins.
Rest in Peace

From what I can gather, you paid $135 for the indian quarter eagle and about $40 for the lib half eagle? Regardless of grade, those were awesome purchases! I bet your glad that your wife bought a few more raffle tickets, eh? :-)

I don't see obvious signs of cleaning though the fact that there is no apparent luster in the fields might be indicative of a cleaning. As COwnas said, these are extremely tough to grade by picture. all services are generous with hairlines on gold indians to some extent. I used to collect certified indian quarter eagles. They both have a few deeper scratches, but nothing terribly obnoxious. Honestly, I would be happy that they are both genuine for the price you paid! Congrats!

Thanks for your input guys. Well the Half Eagle actually cost me $20 bucks. The wife was supposed to buy 10 raffle tickets at $2 each and put her name on 5 and mine on the other 5. She put her name on all 10. So I wonder which if any of the 2 prizes she won would have been mine. Not that it really matters.

By the way, does it look like someone took a black marker to the Indian Chiefs head dress to you guys? I will have to go back and take another look at that because the pic shows some monkey business.

From the pics I don't see anything that suggests someone hit it with a marker. Dirt and other particles often gets collected in the incused crevasses of the design, I see signs of this in the beaded design of the headband. This may be what you are seeing.
