Hello. I'm new to collecting, but I've found what I believe is a rare coin, and proof set. I bought a 1999 complete proof set from ebay, and later realized it contained a 1999 close "AM" Lincoln Cent. Does anyone know of an approximate value for this set? Would it be wiser to sell the set intact, or break it up, and have the Lincoln Cent slabbed and certified? Any help you could give this newbie would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance

No, it is definitely the close "AM". The coin is supposed to have the Wide "AM". This one does not.

If you do have a Close AM proof, it is worth a ton! We would really like to over it if you could post some pics.

Whether to break it up or not, have it graded, etc depends on what your ultimate plans are. It sounds like you may be leaning towards selling it. If you are, can you estimate the grade yourself?

IF I were to go to sell it, I would only get it graded IF it had a chance to grade very high. Wait for other opinions on this though before you decide.

I haven't checked prices on these of late, but at one time I can remember grey sheet bid on a 1999S proof set at $165 and I had a dealer interested in buying my three at $250 each. That may help gauge things a bit.

One thing I can tell you is that the 1999S close-AM proof cents are FAR more common than the 1998S close-AM cents. For me to have three sets means they are more common than many people think.

Thanks for the input Chuck. I thought they were worth a little more than that, but still a nice find!
