I am wondering what this coin is, When it came out? It says Royal Canadian Mint on each side, one side is Ottawa and the other side is Winnipeg. It appears to be made out of copper. [red[Identified - moved to Medals forum - Sap[/red]

Is it a medallion/token struck in 2008 to commemorate the founding of the Royal Canadian Mint( RCM) in 1908? (>>> editted by me! No, it ain't! Editted by me to dispell(?!) misinformation) The original Ottawa RCM of course now includes the Winnipeg mint as well. It was produced by the RCM, but I don't know which mint location it was actually struck at. I have one as well... but I don't have it rite at hand, but I got a picture somewhere VVV. ... edit >>> ^^^ That's the first image I've uploaded with this forum's "Add Image" feature. I'm gonna stick with PhotoBucket, no offence to anyone, but PB is happy with my filenames and sizes... but the hassle factor is about the same in either case... for me anyway.

hmmm... well, perhaps I made an assumption that the person I originally got the piece from had the correct info(which is what I have in my notes. And I did get it in 2008, along with...). The RCM does have some interesting commemorative dates... like their 90th anniversary set. Why they didn't wait the extra 10 years ... Anyway, you got me wonderin' and I'm gonna take a look around for what purpose/date the item was produced.

Never really gave the item much thought until now. It's really not my forte but I also seldom get rid of any coins/medallions/tokens. But I do take care of them and plan to research them as I go... Anyway... AhhHaahhh ... okay, it's just a mint visitor's medallion... the sixth one down linked list below VVV. http://www.give-a-buck.com/cancoins/oddities.html

Nice work, IBGolden. I knew I had seen them for many years in dealers' "junk" bins for a dollar or two, but couldn't remember exactly what they were for.

I recently picked up one of these from a friend. I contacted the mint with a couple of questions and this is the reply. What is the composition? Copper Where is it minted? Ottawa Mint Which side is the intended obverse? This medallion has no specific obverse since it is purely a commemorative medallion from your visit at the RCM facility. A souvenir in other hands. Ottawa Mint on one side and Winnipeg Mint on the other side. Are these (or similar) still available at the mint if I can get there to visit? The medallions are unlimited edition and are produced every year. Since they do not bear the year on them, we can continuously sell them at our giftshops.

I wonder what year they started production of these (I know the guy in IBGolden's link said around 1987, but that was just when he picked it up at the gift shop)? What do they cost at the gift shop? That seems like a pretty big revenue maker for all those years! No wonder I see so many in junk boxes...
