Yesterday at a club meeting I found an 1878S Long Nock VG-F for 15.00 Any value in this low a grade? TIA Harvey

the 78-S long knock is a top 100 coin any way you look like it. theres less than 10 varieties, I'm thinking VAM 27 but your photo's are not good enough for absolutely confirm it..as to value you certainly got a great low ball price, maybe someone has VAM view and could give you an idea of what it trends for...Nice find..

I believe it is a VAM 27. the D in DOLLAR is broken at the bottom and the N in UNITED is disconnected at the right. I found a VF piece last year with the same diagnostics but also with something in the dentils at the top of the reverse, which is worn out on this piece.

Yes a VAM 27 and in sad shape. The 27 is probably the most common of the 78-S long nocks. I've seen these sell for $30-$50 unattributed on ebay as long as the photo clearly showed the long nock.
