If coins could only talk....think of the U.S. history this old darlin' could share with us. And just think of the many hands she passed through before coming to rest here. Now, granted, she comes a mite shy on pretty (grade) but I sure do like the idea of having a coin that was produced while the mint was still young. Heck, for that matter, the country was still pretty young in 1798. This being the oldest U.S. minted coin I own, I wanted to share it with y'all. Thanks for looking. Ralph

I would love to own a darling like that. Someday. Definitely a great piece of history and intrigue.

Great coin. It's nice that the primary details, legend, date, etc. show up. Makes it all the worthwhile for owning. She's only 212 years old. Hope I look that good at 212. Thanks for posting. Dcreek1968

'Very' nice Ralph. There really is just something about an early coin like that, that causes me want to stare for a long time.

I was lucky enough to find one of those in a lot of large cents that I bid on at an auction. Unfortunately it's not in as good shape. The obverse is nearly worn smooth and corroded with some pitting--only the outline of the bust remains. I think that's why it got mixed up with the large cents. But the reverse still has some detail. I actually sent it in to PCGS and they (obviously) didn't grade it but they noted the reverse was from 1795. Even though it's in poor shape it's still one of my favorite finds.

Nice coin! As I read your post, that's the same thing I say about mine! I have a 1798 also (picked it up last year), and first had that thought when I got an 1802 several years ago. All the hands this must have passed through! But I agree, I love the fact that the 1798 is only 4 years into the life of the Mint. Thanks for showing it!

Been having trouble attributing this coin. It appears to be an S-187 but if so it was a very early die state because I can't see any trace of the arc die crack from the T through the base of the Y and out into the field (eventually reaching the rim at 4:00) which is suppose to always be present.

Thanks to all who responded to my post. Proir to this coin, my oldest was an 1800 Large Cent and an 1800 Half Cent -in my type album- they're both pretty worn, too. Conder101 - I looked at the coin with a 20x glass, and see no trace of a die crack - 'course, it's seen alot of circulation over the past couple hundred years, and somebody back down the line somewhere decided it would be prettier if it was a little shinier, so they cleaned it up. About the only thing I can guess about it...it has the reverse of 1897, and I believe it has the style 2 hair. And, 1798 saw 1,841,745 large cents minted (all that from the 2010 RedBook). Ralph
