I came across this phrase last night in Dave Bowers' American Numismatics Before the Civil War 1760-1860. It was in reference to a letter to the Historical Magazine concerning fake Massachusetts silver coins promoted by "a smart Gothamite." Does anyone know what that would have been in 1857? Apparently today it's a Batman fan but what was it back then?

Oh, I can't wait to hear Old Dan's reaction to this one.

Mike it was published in 1998 back when Bowers and Merena was really Bowers and Merena. I don't know if it's still available or who would be selling it today. I got copy #966 so if there was a 1,000 printings there wasn't much left.

ND-I think there's more to this in the context of 1857 than nouns. I believe there may be some kind satire connected to the Gothamite, at least originally. The name, as I understand it, came into existence through a novel by Washington Irving called Salmagundi.

There may very well be more to the definition, but this was all I could get. Like many words we Americans use, they have meanings dependent on what area of the country you are from.
