There is a dot in the lower part of the second 8 in the new 2011 Charlton coin book on page 325 they mention that the engraver repaired the middle 8 of the date by repunching it with a bead punch. the repair left a portion of the bead visible within the lower loop of the middle 8.
At the 9:00 clock position in the lower loop, there is an over or under punch that came from a single bead hand-punch that the mint worker used to correct some flaw in the working die.
