The 2011 Charlton's guide had me looking at my large cents today. Found two anomalies not listed in the guide.

This is an incomplete D in the obverse CANADA.

Nice coin, check out the N's they are single serif they are a little harder to find then the full serif N's. If you have any 1881's check them for the same N's very rare.

Good find Papeldog. If you look at my detail shot the Serif on the N in CANADA is broken. Is that what you mean?

I looked at my other 1881's and 1882's and they all look intact.

I have eight 1859's. Charlton's has a boatload of variations for that date and mine are all standard issue.

Except one. I think it might be a triple strike G.

The new Charlton 2011 65th edition is not really a "guide". 80 popular Victoria varieties were selected from among the mid-100's known and put in the book. Just because it is not in the Charlton doesn't mean it hasn't been found or is scarce. I would estimate that for Rob Turner's book, at least 200 1882's were looked at for differences & similarities.

Stu,

On the top coin it's the N's that make this a killer coin. Don't let it get away. This one is quite scarce!

In my previous post I assumed it was an 1881 but relooking I see it's an 1882. Look for the same N's in an 1881 and you will have a real gem.

For those of you who don't know dan-in-crystal-lake is a celebrity. He was involved in the new end-section on Large Cent varieties in the 2011 Charlton's catalogue. His page http://varieties.piczo.com/ contains a terrific introduction to these 19th century coins.

I hope he doesn't mind being "outed" this way.
