just bought this '48 50¢ and wondering if there is a known minor die variety for this year; "die clash or chip in ear"...?

found the same shape and size mark in this 1948 50¢ on ebay:

I am not sure what your seeing. Your coin has a number of noticeable chips, gouges and bag marks. It also looks like its been polished. Notice the chip on the second G in George. Which of these marks would be a die clash?

On the other hand the ebay coin looks pristine and has an interesting mark at the top of the ear.

I'm not sure I see it either, but I have one graded MS63--I'll check it out.

I can see no evidence of a die clash... I have seen the characteristic 'Hearing Aid' on every other George VI Fifty Cent Coin except for the 1937.

meant to say 'every other year' rather than every other coin.

Sorry about that, my QX-5 microscope takes terrible pics.

These should help:

edit: the ebay coin has the same shaped mark in its ear (see picture 6 of 8 in the listing), leading me to believe this could be die clash

I had a chance to look at several 1948 50 cent coins today. All the low 4 1948's had the mark per your pictures, so its probably an imperfection on the die of some kind (I wouldn't bother calling it a chip as it is relatively minor). The high 4 1948 that I looked at did not have it.
