I put inheritance. My great great grandmother passed a few down starting with a 1869 sheild nickel some body gave her when she was a little girl, and never spent it.I've kept every wheatie and Canadian coin I have ever found because those are of "self interst",but receiving her coins is what initially got me motivated.Someday my son will inherit these treasures :) sn31.

When I was a kid I had a few old foriegn coins but who knows what happended to them......Fast forward 30 years and I am watching the movie National Treasure and kind of enjoyed the whole American history part of the movie. A couple days later, I am at an antique mall and I leave with a couple Walking Liberty halves. Now a couple thousand dollars later, I am officially a coin collector of old US coins and paper money.

My Aunt and Uncle had a pizza house in Beaumont, CA in the late 50's. They received lots of silver dollars as payment. Las Vegas wasn't too far away, and Cabazon, CA just up the road had legalized gambling, so there were a lot of silver dollars floating around in those days. They gave all of us kids a silver dollar, mine an 1879. I've had and sold lots of BU Morgans since then, but of course, that XF 1879 is the one I'll never sell. I remember as a kid thinking..."I can't wait til 1979 and my silver dollar will be 100 years old. Think of how much it'll be worth then". Ha ha, current RedBook price: about 18 bucks! (but that's 17 bucks more than it was worth when they gave it to me!)

I started when I saw the movie GLADIATOR, and remembered somewhere seeing some uncleaned(they looked like rocks)Roman coins and went on ebay to see if any were available. I was amazed that these relics were readily available. I bought a few denarius, but decided U.S. coins would be cheaper, and completeness in collecting is important to me. Empty spaces in an album bug me. I've inherited a few coins, and often wondered why my grandfather, a bank president in the teens and 1920's, didn't leave a set of Morgan dollars in the family coffers. Although they arent worth much now, I'm hopeingto be remembered fondly by unborn generations of my family, for putting away great examples of late 20th century coins (with no expensive holes to fill for completeness)

Welcome to the forum!
Mainly because it is what 2 members of my family did( Grandad and Cousin) Grandad passed away in 2000 and cousin is in college and quit. I thought it'll be a nice try at the hobby.
Thanks!
Thats why I am here. TKC!

I had a friend that collected who got me started but my real interest started when I got an 1878 7tf Morgan and a 1918 1 Franc coin from my Great Uncle in 1971, when I was 6 yrs old. It wasn't until 1977 that I started collecting seriously.

I now collect coins because my eight-year-old son introduced me to the fun and satisfaction of coin collecting. I mostly collect Australian coins for me, but he collects world coins, especially from the U.S.A. and Canada.

Or a different level of communication begins at that age?
Interesting indeed, funnily enough I started at the age of 6 as well.

You folks who can remember back to starting to collect coins at 6 years of age are lucky in one respect, I can't remember back to my sixth birth as it was a long time ago!! But I was very young when I use to help two brothers go through coins looking for the "43" copper and the 1909-S vdb. They use to claim that if you found a 1943 copper penny, you could trade it in for a new car...Was it true, maybe, probably just folkore though.

I voted for "self interest" but my Father always encouraged my collecting and helped me along the way although he was not a collector per say. Mike

Mine is kind of a mix of things. I used to collect when I was little, then my Grandfather showed me his collection, which made me want to collect more. TYhen I kinda stopped buying (just collecting out of circulation). Now I am buying stuff like Morgan's and Peaces and WLH's, and still collecting out of circ.
