I picked just one for your poll - "self interest" but, all of them apply to me. Thanks for the poll.

Bit of this, bit of that. Mostly self-interest though.

I selected investment from your options, but it is a combination of that and self-interest. Plus I like shiny stuff-- . Some I will probably never sell, others I would like to make a profit--eventually--

My GrandMother gave me a coin she carried from Germany with her in the late 1880's. I have it with her picture on my desk. My first. My favorite.

I put other because it's been a dream of mine and the family to have a "treasure" to pass down to each generation until we all die because of a meoter or something else

My grandfather started me when I was young with a small collection of foreign coins. I added to it with whatever I could find in my parent's pocket change. I had't even thought about that collection for 20 years until I quit smoking and was looking for something to keep me occupied. The coins that I've acquired over the last 18 months were all bought with the money I used to spend on butts (about $25 a week).

Has anyone noticed that they got started by someone else who gave them a coin or is that just me

I put down self interest. I dunno how I got started...all I know is that I've been interested in coins since I was 6 or so.

Started with coins because my wife bought an Alaska silver round at an antiques show and I bought three Mercury dimes from the same guy. Also, because I quit smoking and was bored and didn't have anything else to do with the cigarette money. That was a year and a half ago. I've always collected something. Teenager, it was girlfriends, LOL, seriously. I drove them crazy in a short amount of time so I usually had to get a new one every 3 months or so. In my 20's it was comic books, don't have any of those left. In my 30's it was baseball and Nascar cards, don't have any of those left either. Now, in my 40's, I have coins, first edition books and some pottery. Hoping the trend will stop here and it will be coins from here on out. Me and my wife also have a nice little DVD collection as well.

I remember growing up as a kid my grandfather always had coins and was quite the collector. Later on in life I was able to purchase some decent coins that hopefully will only go up in value. At this point in time I have no interest in selling anything. Years from now I hope to pass them on to my son.

I've also noticed that many of our members started when they were 6 years old. Interesting that I would notice that - hmmmmm Must be something about a 6 year old and their comprehension or maybe it's an early age of expanding a young persons interest level - "right of passage" perhaps? Or a different level of communication begins at that age?

I found a South Carolina quarter in circulation that was about 5-10% off-centered and I thought it was cool. I still have that quarter and many more coins now six years later.
