I'm getting up a group of coins to send in for grading and need some advice from the Big Dogs on possible grades. Here is an 1852 3 cent silver Trime that looks high grade UNC to my unpolished eye. Opinions please. I can't bring myself to take it out of the Type Set album unless absolutely necessary due to the thinness and fragility of the coin. I thought it interesting that the imprint of the obverse star shows plainly through on the reverse. Is that normal? Paleoguy

It does appear to be mint state, but overall it's hard to say due to the lack of focus and the shadow from the holder.

One of my books says to check the shield on the obverse and the Roman III on the reverse for wear. I can't really see any.

And I really couldn't comment of the impression of the star seen on the reverse. It's a very interesting and beautiful coin. Good luck with the grading.

wow - that's a beaut! Definitely a high AU at worst, as far as I can tell! Does your camera have a macro setting? It normally looks like a tulip (flower)...

Yep! It's in "tulip" mode but the little critter is sooooooo tiny. I'll try tomorrow in natural light to get some better shots. Paleoguy

This guy is a tuff one to find in high AU or better Graded examples to compare with..The shield looks like it may have some light wear. Trime's have 3 types, or design changes so the focal area in general is the same as far a grading standards are concerned, but the wear shows up Slightly different. I am thinking AU 58 from Graded examples I have seen on ebay and Teletrade... It could be higher, the star imprint on the revers is a clashing due to the thinness of the coin, its prevalent on many of the examples I have seen....Let us know what happens...

I believe light circulation too. the shield rim looks a little worn on the right. Awesome coin though.

I have to add that the last picture of the reverse shows a very nice image of the obverse star behind the central C and Roman Numeral III. I don't think that is from a clashed die though. Just happens to come through during the normal striking process on a coin as small and "thin" as this one. Great coin and pics.
