I've been searching cent rolls on and off for about a year and a half and always find amazing stuff. Heres the thing, I've been buying them at the customer service counter of my local supermarket. Mostly because I'm too lazy or nervous to go to the bank and buy rolled coins. I've been getting a lot of junk lately from the store (maybe they got a crappy pennie fund set up for me lol) So, I'd like to try the bank. The closest one is a First Niagara. With all that said, my question is, what's it like to buy rolled coins at the bank? Do the tellers get suspicious, don't care, is an account mandatory? Gimmie the 411 please!

For banks in my area, an account is necessary. Some tellers get mad, but most save me the good stuff.

I'd say an account is necessary at most branches. You'd be surprised how little attention they pay to a request for a box of coins, they just have someone head to the vault to pick it out. Getting just a few rolls actually causes more of a commotion because they may try to dig up the rolls from the other tellers (depending on the bank they may only have a single roll in their drawer). One or two boxes of a denomination will probably be filled instantly, more than that and they probably have to order it and asked you to come back, even then, it is no big deal to them.

I've gotten boxes of coins from banks I've never been to before. I just walk up to the Merchant tellers window and ask for a box. Act like you have an account there.

I agree with Neil. I just walk in and up to the counter and say I need a box of pennys. Have never even been asked if I have an account or anything. Some banks know what I want as soon as I walk in now. I get cleared rolled cents and they know I like the dark cents not the shiny new lookin ones. Have never gotten an attitude either. WOLF

I agree with the two above. I have bought hundreds of boxes of nickels over the last few years and only on rare occasions am I given any hassle. And if you are, just go to a different bank!

I have recently been averaging 4 boxes of pennys a weekend. I buy from two banks and dump at three different ones. I never have an issue at the buy banks; I have had one teller say "you must be one of those roll searchers". I also usually ask them if they have any old coins or large dollars-frequently pick up a few Ikes that way (my record is 40 at one bank). The dump banks always take the coins, but I can tell that sometimes the teller does not like it. I always roll my coins first (dont think they would take them if I didnt).

As for returning coins, just ask at your bank how they want you to bring it in. I bank at two different chains, and locally Wells Fargo won't take rolled coins while Chase won't take unrolled coins. If you can find a location with a customer-service coin counter that's fine, but many forum users report that the public counters are less accurate than the ones behind the counter that the tellers use.

Thank you to everyone for your advice. I plan to buy my first $25 box soon. Maybe make a video out of it too when I open the box.
One other thing, how do I subscribe to a thread so I don't have to keep checking back for answers LOL?
