I'm normally not into non-US coins, but the gold escudo has always had a special place in my heart. Partly because I like gold, I like the fact they were used as currency in the US, and I LOVE the fact that they remind me of pirate treasure! They also come in many different varieties from many different countries over the span of 100s of years! I've owned a 1 escudo and a 1/2 escudo in the past, and recently just purchased a 1787 8 escudo from Columbia! (pictures to come when I receive it). Anyways, I haven't found much info about them on the internet nor on the forums, so I wanted to start a general thread where people can post pictures of their escudos, share general information, links, questions...whatever involving gold escudos! Here is a nice 1/2 escudo from madrid that I recently purchased from napolean.

Quote: At partly because it was the focus of Guess the Price: Season 12, Round 5? yeah, that was fun; though I've had an affinity towards them for several years. I'm even thinking about doing an escudo type set of King Carlos III or IV(those seem to be the most common).

What you have there Turtleoverhead in the 1/2 escudo appears to be a beautiful example of a clashed die. By the way, your Portuguese 4's are amazing.

Quote: I posted these in the World Coin Forum some time back but they fit well in this thread. Here are some of the "big brothers" to the 8 reales coins I collect. All four are Spanish Colonial from the Mexico City Mint. Wow, that's a beautiful start to a large escudo type set there! The one I purchased is similar to your first one with Carlos III, though not quite as nice. I still have a lot to learn about these coins. Are there major differences in value for the different types?

Received my 8 escudo today! It pales in comparison to jfranch's example, but I'm still pleased with it to round off my gold collection.
