I took the self guided Philadelphia Mint tour yesterday.

I found it a little disappointing. You could see the machinery in action from a distance through windows. Would have been nice to see it up close.

They did have a nice commemorative coin display including the classics and some large gold and silver bars.

The gift shop had current mint products at the same price you would pay online and coin dispensers for the current ATB Quarter and Presidential dollar at face value. Those appeared to be P mint only.

I expected more when I took the tour. Also was disappointed when I learned they did not sell rolls. I think I recall my father saying he had bought rolls from the mint gift shop years ago.

I live about 30 miles from the Philly mint and have only taken the tour twice, once as a child and just this year again. The tour this year was a letdown compared to the one I took in grade school. If memory serves me correctly they gave us all a new penny back in the sixties. The people who run the store there are very nice and knowledgeable but what they have to offer is not the same as the online store. I believe they are a private business and not a government run service. The Philly mint was shut down to the public from 9/11 until about 2 years ago.

I took that tour ages ago, not sure if you have 'pre-register' on the website like you do now for the Denver Mint tour, but really it is like going thru a factory tour minus the freebies at the end. Nothing real special about waching coins on a conveyer belt. I recall at the gift shop they were showing the moving replay of Muhammad Ali running up the steps with the Olympic torch, and I bought several of the mint sets with one and only W mint dime, so it had to be summer of '96.

I don't know what the policy is for larger groups but individuals or families can just walk up and take the tour.

No preregistration necessary at the Philly Mint.

There were huge groups coming in together mostly of boy scouts.

Interesting on the web site it says no cell phones but there were many people inside with their phones. You do have to go through screening similar to what they do at airports.
