I am more of a darksider so I am not quite sure how to grade this 1897 O morgan. Do you think that it is a Fine or a VF? Thanks!

Yup, VF 20-25 looks about right to me. It could be higher since the New Orleans mint was so prevalent in weak strikes.

I would grade it at VF-25.

Interesting coin. It has all the diagnostics for VAM-6, except the die cracks on the reverse are wrong.

Everyone- Thanks for the input!

SuperDave- I must totally admit that I am a darksider and not a US collector (I just inherited a bunch of US stuff recently). So I have no idea what a VAM-6 is. So what is a VAM-6?

Morgan dollars are categorized by varieties called VAM's, an acronym honoring Leroy Van Allen and A. George Malis, who began the process of identifying Morgan die varieties. It's a huge and ongoing effort, given the staggering number of dies (over 6,000, not including 1921) used for Morgan mintage. Your coin's variety is characterized by the location of the date - somewhat left of normal - and the high + right-tilted mint mark placement. The die cracks I see in UNITED do not match known information for this variety, though, which is why I find the coin interesting.

Its also interesting to NOTE, that the plate photo's of VAM 6 and 6A Rev MM are not in the same position.. the 6 is a very high O and the 6a is lower
here is VAM 6

1897-O-Morgan
and then VAM 6A

1897-O-Morgan
someones got some photo's mixed up there
VAM 6 looks good by the date4 and MM, however VAM 8 and VAM 8A were redesigned as the LDS of VAM 6
