I have a fascination with the draped bust series particularly of the dime and quarter since you had this gap in production between 1796 and 1804 for the quarter and also no examples of dimes for 1799-1801. Also interested in how few of the pre 1805 dimes have been graded by the 4 major services. Anyone else out there collect these coins?
Rest in Peace

I do. Getting the better dates is rough, though.

I collect the quarters mostly, which are proving hard to find with good eye appeal. They are also not affordable in the same way bust dimes and halves are.

Does having one bust dime count as collecting them?
If so yeah I'm a collector

Oh man, the draped bust is I think my favorite US design (at least for coins I can afford or pretend to afford now). An F cent is on my list for maybe next year. It's just a BEAUTIFUL design, and a really cool period in our history. I was commenting to another gent that Washington was in office until early 1797, and how cool is that? To have a coin from when Washington was yet in office! Talk about formative years. And nobody would say THAT version of Liberty has the "heebie jeebies". She's puuuuuurty... =) Unfortunately, the heraldic eagle, my preference, only came about in 1800 or so, so we were already on to the next president. And, far as I can tell, there ain't nothing wrong with John Adams! It's just that, well, he's not Washington.

Dimes are awesome because of the detail involved, but in lower grade, I might go for quarters or even halves. If you're going for higher grade stuff, personally I'd go for dimes or halves.

One of the things I think about when collecting lower grade coins is, "what was this thing used for?" I'm not sure what a quarter could buy in 1804, but I'm sure dimes were used readily in transactions. Maybe I'm silly, but it makes me feel more a part of history...

By the way, just thought I might mention, I believe if you find yourself in the market for dimes Mr. Vermontensium might have one up your alley. =)

But yes, I'm in agreement that draped busts are awesome (in more ways than one, I suppose) and I will thoroughly enjoy watching your collection grow- so please share pics as you pick up pieces!

I have a few of each but found that an attempt to make an entire collection of them was almost impossible. Prices for any of them is a bit out of my spendability. For the Quaters it is difficult to even find a G4 for less than $30 regardless of the dates.
I wonder if it's because they don't make them anymore
It is odd too that China hasn't started making them yet.

I picked up a scratched AG 1807 quarter and carry it as a pocket piece. It's amazing how similar it is to the Spanish 2 Reales from the same period. Same diameter and thickness, and virtually the same weight.
