Hey everybody, first post obviously. I have an 1881 $5 piece that is overall in AU possibly low MS condition but has a scratch that I want your opinions on. It doesn't bother me if the scratch reduces the grade if the coin was submitted for grading but it would bother me if the coin didnt get a straight grade and instead received something along the lines of "scratched" or "genuine" or "damaged" or whatever. I'm not interested in submitting for grading because its a common date piece but I am more concerned about resale value and what the future buyer thinks about the scratch. So what do you guys think the TPG's would say about the scratch under "STATES" on the reverse?

First of all - - to CCF!

As you noted, this piece is a common date and it appears to be in AU condition, so the scratch should not effect it's value.

Circulated, common date gold pieces are valued primarily on their gold content and your coin has almost 1/4 troy ounce of gold in it. There's about a 15% premium over melt on this coin making it worth around $350 today.

I agree. The coin looks to be around AU55 and the scratch, IMO, does not really distract too much. Welcome!

My suspicions are not aroused here. If I am required to look at a scratched high value coin, I look to see if the edges of the scratch are sharply defined; in this case it looks like a genuine scratch. Almost all U.S. gold I have been told, have been copied, and explosive impact made dies produce very convincing fakes, sometimes made from genuine gold alloy. In these cases, small scratches are not well defined, and can aid in detection
