Okay, first: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...290452339514Now, I know based on the description and the country, I was an idiot for pursuing this but the coin looked okay and the price seemed right or actually very low BUT then once I received the coin and looked at it, I thought to myself, "No way would I buy this coin as MS67. That is when I went back to the ebay listing and noticed that they did not have a photo of the obverse! How could I do this? The face is marred, scratches everywhere and obvious wear in the hair. Most of the coins I have bought on ebay have been very low in price just to avoid any issues and to date, I have never had an issue. So...what would you do first? Contact the seller I assume. Would I have to pay shipping back to Australia? Do I leave negative feedback? Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Edit: I grade the face of the coin at AU at the most with the wear and gouges. Taking this coin from $77 to $20 Edited by johnstac 07/26/2010 10:29 pm

Man oh man, lesson learned. 1) Foreign seller, might be OK, but paying the high shipping and possibly having to deal with a return is a huge negative. I never buy from anyone outside the US, it's not worth the risk. 2) Slabbed from a non-top tier TPG basement slabber UCGS......never worth trusting. When you see a basement slab assume it's a much, much lower grade, in this case probably AU or less. Target your max bid based on CDN, in this case maybe EF or melt. If it goes above your max, let the bidiots have it. There's always another day and another coin. 3) I never trust a seller that makes ridiculous value claims, pure BS. That's a HUGE red flag. At this point it wouldn't hurt to contact the seller see what they offer. Even though they say "no returns accepted", they might give in to keep their 100% rating. If they won't refund plus shipping, I'd just keep it and have a lesson learned. You don't want to be out $20 in shipping on a $66 buy on a coin that might be worth little above melt.

I will buy on ebay, but it is only on low priced items. I you are going to buy high grade coins, you really do need to look at them with a magnifying glass, or buy slabbed coins from a reputable dealer. For my part, I have been into ancients foe many years, and I must look at them in my hand, unless they are coming from a reputable source such as Heritage, or other such source of high reputation.

Well, you are right on as far as things I should have been looking for. This listing was covered with red flags from top to bottom and I really do mean from top to bottom. In the upper area of their description, in large bold letters states, "7 DAY 100% MONEY BACK GUARANTEE" But then at the very very bottom in the last paragraph they have a terms of sale that states, "Refunds are accepted only if item proven false or fake, no refund for grading issues as we are not responsible for the grading system" I don't know how ebay would treat this. I'm hoping that the seller will not be willing to risk his 100% feedback and postage will only be $4 plus confirmation, insurance, etc. What a dumb dumb thing to do. I had this same type of issue happen at auctionzip.com. and it was many hundreds more. I plan on posting more about auctionzip and that issue once I get some decent photos to post here. I guess it's because there are no good places to buy from in my area, that I buy from online places. And as you well know Thad, I spend most of my money right here at Coin Community and have also had the best results here.

Is the coin an 1885 or an 1885-O? I see a reverse image of an "O" mint coin.
Anyways, it's "significantly not as described" and for $70 I'd return it. Contact the seller first with your concerns. If they refuse a return, go through PayPal.

I also just spent $2200 on one ebay transaction but it was for silver eagles from a seller with over 5k in feedback and I have been wanting to invest a little bit in silver. I guess it's all in the seller I suppose.

bherring: Thanks for pointing out that the coin is worth even less! lol...just kidding. But, that might be a good thing since the coin was described as an 1885 not an 1885 O. So even with their little loophole that the coin cannot be returned due to grade, they did not indicate the correct mint of origin as well. I wrote them once and I will send this information as well. Thanks for the help guys.

Okay, I need some quick advice here. I wrote to the guy twice through ebay communication. The first email I indicated that the grade was way off. He offered a $20 refund. Before I had time to answer that one, I wrote to him and mentioned (as bherring so awesomely pointed out) that the mintmark is not Philadelphia and actually New Orleans. In this second email he offered $40 or I can return it to him. This brings the price from $76.90 to 36.90, but the coin is still only worth $20 on greysheet. If not, it will cost me $4 to ship it back to Australia and they don't offer confirmation or insurance through the USPS. He seems very interested in maintaining his feedback score. So much so that he stated that I would be required to give him 100% feedback before he did any refund. In a case like this I sometimes wonder if it would just be better to end the ordeal than to have to worry about the coin getting there or whatever else could happen. It's a $16 dollar difference.

Best of luck to you whatever you decide to do. I'm in a similiar situation, I got carried away with a coin the other day on ebay and like yours there was no picture of the other side just the obverse. So I'm waiting for it right now. We will see how that goes.

Part if this ebay transaction was my oversight because while he didn't provide all of the photos where they normally are, he wrote back and stated that they were together with the description. In fact, they were but I didn't notice that. I saw all of the sales mumbo jumbo and thought that those photos were part of this sales banner or something.

I would suggest ( if you do not want the coin for the $40 dollars off) to recontact the seller, and let him know as stated above, the coin is "not as described" and this is a reason for the "not acceptable" coin. I would let the seller know because he, through no fault of your own, did not represent the coin properly, mint mark etc, and you want a full refund, plus return shipping in writing before you ship the coin back, in writing you have some sort of leg to stand on, if you have to report this all to pay/pal or whom ever. Let him know you will leave the "proper" feedback for him if he does not "play fair".
I would also say, if you want the coin, counter-offer his rebate, IMO this coin for 36.00 dollars is high, 26 is a deal, all just my opinion....Goodluck.

The coin I see in the auction (if it's the one you have in hand) is worth about $25 give or take. I don't like the idea of haggling with an ebay seller in Australia but........ask for $50 back and if he agrees, keep the coin for $26.90.

Be careful about the no confirmation on shipping or he can just say you never sent it back and you are SOL if you go to paypal about it.

I'd be inclined to take the $40 refund and be done. However, I would not be held hostage with feedback BEFORE the refund. Explain to him that feedback occurs AFTER the deal is completed to everyones satisfaction.

On every ebay transaction I have had, postage is always a concern. It often costs more to ship an item than the item itself. However, since you aren't satisfied with the coin, send it back and take the hit. Keeping it is only going to add toxicity to your life. Every time you look at it you are going to get angry, so get rid of the darn thing ! Man, let loose of the bad stuff and move on. That particular coin is not worth the grief. It's not worth the stress it has already brought. Get rid of it ! Just my opinion

With something like that you need to know what a 67 looks like. I just got a few in the store yesterday and after looking at the it in OBVIOUS that that was no 67. Also its been said before but there were just to many red flags.
