It will be interesting to see what this one goes for. It trends at $12,000 but the corrosion should take 1000s off the price IMO. Anyone care to predict the final price? Items almost always sell at %50-%70 of trends but this is a KEY so who knows. I'll guess $4000 http://cgi.ebay.com/ICCS-VG-8-1859-...cmd=ViewItem

It's pretty amazing...it still looks so beautiful despite the corrosion. I'll guess $2500-$3000

My guess would be that it won't sell thanks to the reserve. Hard to say what it will get up to though.

This guy do not give his stuff. He is just testing the market.I would have sent it to TCNC for their upcoming auction instead of paying ebay the insertion fee

This seller is fairly negotiable and very easy to work with. Today I just purchased an I.C.G. (x-graded I.C.C.S.) Canada, 1923 MS-64 nickel for only 60% trends from this same seller. Within 1 hour of making Paypal payment he sent me the Tracking # . Very impressive person to deal with! The only person who will purchase this coin at the 1000's that he has a Reserve on, will have to be a die hard cent collector. Can you imagine the gorgeous mintstate, 1858 , red cent you can buy for that price? Glenn

I wouldn't buy an ICCS graded coin that was graded in the last 2 years without seeing it first in-hand. But there is no way, with the numbering system, to know when it was graded/cert'd.

Let's just say that their stellar reputation for TPG has taken a few hits as of late. Still a good company, but some very shakey certifications in the last 18 months or so. The misattributions have been few and are the exception rather than the rule, but very visible. I wouldn't buy a coin like this for that kind of money without having it in hand and a spectroanalysis or electron shot done on it.

So much for my guess. Anyone have the 2010 ICCS population report that could tell us how many Brass' have been certified?

Unfortunately I have only the 2009 I.C.C.S. Population Report. It states there are 20 across the board with the highest being a VF-30. Perhaps it was worth the $14,000.00 U.S. spent? That kind of money I would have bought some nice Vicky halves! Glenn

Wow, someone really wanted that coin and figured it to be a good investment. I was wrong with my guess!

I would not pay that kind of money for this ugly coin.I also know for a fact that the seller has another one in his collection. How much do you think he will be asking for it now that he sold this dog for 14K.I feel sory for the buyer.

hmm this is an old post ... if a coin graded that low went for $14g I may have to part with one of my brass 1859 1 cent coins .... I have two that are nearly mint one has amazing purple and magenta patina fading to black ... I am not one to sell my collection coins but I am a German and Newfoundland coin collector and tend to stick to them but I did inherit a huge collection from my great grandfather who got me into this hobby that includes quite a few rare canadian coins ... I rarely buy coins that are any less than AU or MS.
I think this may be my first post here as I usually just read the coin forums : ) and input on the automobile forums (true love is old Porsches) .... anyways if I knew how to list photos I would put up to see what you guys think ...
thanks

quattronewf,
You mentioned that you have a couple of 1859 brass pennies... that's amazing in itself... AND you also mentioned that they are near mint state !!! WOW.
When you figure out how to list photos, I'd love to see a few of these beauties.
You also mentioned that you collect Newfoundland coins. Do you have an 1873 5 cent coin in EF+ or better? I'm curious to know if there is anyone out there who actually owns one of these.

I would be absolutely amazed if you have even 1 "brass" cent. There are many 1859's that look like brass because of chemical or alternate means of changing the surface luster but, until an 1859 is "certified" as being brass by a reputable company, then it's just another questionable alloy mix of the bronze at the mintin time. I'm sure that you could get NNC or ACG to certify it as brass, but those are garage door outfits. Can you post a photo or two of your "brass" cents? Thank you. BTW, as far as I know, brass does not turn to purple or magenta unless potatos or heat are involved.
